How Big John Works...

Big John Marine Services operates the Harbor Service Derrick Barge "BIG JOHN" in and around the Port of Houston. The Big John is berthed in Greens Bayou. The transit time to the turning basin in the Port of Houston is approximately 2 hours. A trip to Barbour's Cut takes approximately 3 ½ hours. Big John has a lifting capacity of 500 Tons (see lift chart). The "upper works" of the crane is positioned on a barge which is 180 ft long, 70 ft wide and 12 ft deep. The traveling draft of the barge is 2 ft on the boom and 7 ft at the counter weight end. The barge has constant counter ballast that is maintained by keeping the rear tanks of the barge topped with fresh water. There is no need to ballast the barge during lifting operations.

During transport the optimum boom and mast positions put Big John at 130 ft about the water. Two tugs are used during transport and lifting operations to mobe and demobe from job sites and to assist in movement during lifting operations. Deck winches and air tuggers are used to give the precise control needed during lifting operations to insure that the movement of the loads are maintained at all times.

Big John Marine Services has an extensive inventory of slings, shackles, spreader bars, and other rigging supplies. In most cases we can supply the lifting components to match your needs, even when dimensions, weight and center of gravity necessitate unique requirements.

Big John Marine Services has a CAD (computer assisted drawing) system to plan the projects to have a finite look at the lifts on paper before the actual work. This helps in planning and diminishes the guesswork of lifting unusual as well as straight forward lifts. All of over lifts came with a plan. Correction may become necessary at the job site, but we find that with a specific plan, most of the lifts get done the first time without the guesswork that comes from unplanned projects. Attention to details is the bases of our excellent reputation for safe lifting procedures.

Scheduling our services is generally not any problem. As soon as you know the need, let us get your job on the calendar. Last minute adjustments are required, and we keep a dynamic schedule, updated daily to serve the needs of all of our clients. Most of our job "hit" the schedule 2 to 3 weeks in advance of the work. There are occasions when short notice is what we get. We take pride in our flexibility at Big John Marine Services with the objective to satisfy our clients.
